PUNCH

I provided dramaturgical support for a new performance project, Punch, led by Ignė Barkauskaite and produced by Projekt Europa (now Projekt Utopia) in association with Bristol Old Vic.

I helped conduct a series of interviews with staff, participants and supporters of the Empire Fighting Chance Boxing Gym in Easton, Bristol. These interviews then informed a discussion with the lead artist and creative team over what a piece of theatre might look like based on the material and fed into the development of the piece.

Through a combination of physical theatre, electronic music, boxing and community participation, PUNCH takes audiences on a journey through the vibrant streets of Easton, immersing them into the world of boxing through the eyes of young people, exploring their physical and emotional journeys as they navigate the ups and downs of early adult life, finding the strength to persevere.
The project draws inspiration from the true-life experiences of young individuals who have overcome considerable challenges with the support of Empire Fighting Chance, an award-winning charity located in Easton, Bristol. The organisation uses the transformative power of boxing to combat the effects of inequality - homelessness, gang affiliation, crime - on young people's lives.

The initial development phase for PUNCH took place in the summer of 2024
